Marty Bird had a record-setting career as an athlete at Simsbury High School and the University of Connecticut. As a football player for Simsbury High School Marty never lost a football game he participated in. He played on three Conference Championship Teams and set the school and state record for most total points (151) in 1971. He was a three-time All- Conference athlete in football, including honors on both offense and defense. He was a Hartford Times All- Suburban Team selection as well as a New Haven Register All-State athlete on both sides of the ball. In 1972 he earned the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete Award. In baseball at SHS he led the state in stolen bases (32 in 1971) and was an All-Conference player. Marty attended UCONN on a football scholarship and in a game in 1974 against the University of New Hampshire he tied the team record for most interceptions in a game (3), a record he still shares with five other athletes, including former NFL star Darius Butler. Marty started at cornerback for three years at UCONN where he also punted, kicked off, and was a return specialist. He even played (and scored) as a fullback.
