Bob Broderick's mission as the Athletic Director at Simsbury High School was to create, sponsor, and administer a comprehensive co-ed athletic program. His vision offered every boy and every girl in the school the opportunity to participate in a sport. The athletic program had to be, "right for the best and right for the rest." Bob felt that the measure for determining the success of an athletic program, beyond wins and losses, was the participants' understanding that they were academic students first and athletes second. He advocated that the true mission of a high school athletic program is to serve students and provide them with an opportunity to learn and grow into successful adults. During Bob's tenure at Simsbury, the athletic program was expanded from 14 to 34 sports (a 250 percent increase). The program earned the Connecticut Michael's Cup (a measure for outstanding athletic programs in Connecticut) four times between the mid 1980’s, when the award was created, and 2000.
