Brian Coombes was an outstanding basketball player for Simsbury High School, averaging over 20 points per game in both his junior and senior seasons and scoring over 900 career points in two varsity seasons. He still holds the boys basketball single game scoring record of 44 points, accomplished in February 1973. That same year, Brian was named First Team Class L All State and First Team All Suburban. He was selected to play in the 1973 CT Class L and LL senior All-Star game. Following high school, Brian played basketball at Hamilton College in upstate New York. In Brian’s junior and senior seasons, Hamilton was ranked in the top ten nationally in Division III. Brian scored over 1,200 career points, grabbed more than 500 rebounds, and graduated as Hamilton's third all-time leading scorer. After college Brian played two seasons in the New England Basketball Association (NEBA) for the East Hartford Explorers. The Explorers won the NEBA championship in 1979-1980. In 1981-1982 Brian played professionally for Birmingham, England, in the English Basketball League (EBL) where he averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. Brian has volunteered as an analyst on Simsbury Community Television (SCTV), broadcasting SHS basketball games for the past 15 years and SHS football games for the past 8 years. Brian and his wife Denise raised their family in Simsbury. Their three children, Bill, Nicole, and Troy, are all graduates of Simsbury High School.
