Peter Pereira played lacrosse and wrestled all four years at Simsbury High School but the wrestling mats are where Peter earned exceptional accolades During his junior year, which was, amazingly, his first year as a varsity athlete, Peter was named first-team All-Conference and he won the Class LL Wrestling Title at 171 pounds. He was also a Connecticut State Open Finalist that year. Peter’s senior year was perfect. He won all forty matches he wrestled. Along the path to forty he won his second LL Title, the Connecticut State Open Title, and he became Simsbury’s first ever New England Wrestling Champion when he won the 1990 171 Pound Title while leading the Trojans to a 7th place finish in the team race. Peter ended his career with more than 70 wins (71-5) and his 93.4% win percentage is the second greatest career win percentage in history (with more than thirty wins). Peter started a tradition in his family that has made the Pereira family, including sister, Julie, a former team manager, the best of the best among Simsbury and Connecticut wrestling families as no three brothers in state history have ever accomplished what they did. Pete, Joe and John each won two individual Class Titles and a Connecticut State Open title. John was also a New England Finalist. In total, the brothers combined to win ten individual Class, Open, and New England Titles and over 300 individual matches. Peter went on to wrestle and play rugby at Southern Connecticut State University. Upon graduation he followed his athletic passion in an extensive rugby career where he competed in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. He played in the New Haven Rugby Club, on the New York Old Blue, and in the US Super League. He was inducted into the New Haven Rugby Hall of Fame in 2016. Peter lives in North Haven, CT with his wife Aurelie and seven year old son Peter.
